The Wallingford Family YMCA is proud to host the annual Fishbein/YMCA Community Road Race on October 6th this year, in collaboration with Celebrate Wallingford. With the center of Wallingford closed off for this town-wide event, thousands of people look forward to the fun and excitement each year!
The Wallingford Family YMCA is a charitable organization, with a mission to strengthen the foundation of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body. We invite you to join us in supporting people in need in our community through sponsorship for our most important community event, the Fishbein/YMCA Community Road Race on Sunday, October 6,2019.
All proceeds go towards LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, our cancer survivor program that is offered free of charge to participants, and to our Community Support Campaign. As a non-profit organization, the Y relies on contributions from members and other friends to promote the healthy development of all regardless of their financial means. 100% of each contributed dollar goes to subsidize the cost of programs for children, families and seniors and to give financial assistance to those who need it.
We hope that you will join us in the spirit of giving and support the Greater Wallingford community. Thank you for your generosity and we look forward to having you as a
Fishbein/YMCA Community Road Race History
Almost 50 years ago, a tradition started in Wallingford that would grow and change significantly over the years, bringing organizations throughout the town together to collaborate in an effort to support residents in need.
Roz Gallagher, a lifetime resident of Wallingford, says, “My mother, Johanna Manfreda Fishbein, was the original organizer of the Race along with Ned Roessler from Choate Rosemary Hall. She was the driving force behind it for just under thirty years. At the time of her passing in 1997, it was decided to name the Race in her honor to perpetuate her memory and spirit.”
In 1977, soon after the Community Road Race started, the Wallingford Family YMCA hosted their first Road Race, with proceeds benefitting the charitable organization that never turns anyone away for their inability to pay. Twenty-five years later, the Town of Wallingford began hosting what would become the third event that would eventually be wrapped into one fun-filled day. Connecticut’s Family Day was created in 1997 as a statewide event which celebrated families and was originally funded by the State of Connecticut. The theme of Connecticut’s Family Day, “Valuing Connecticut’s Families…It’s Everybody’s Business,” remains the same and reinforces the message that families are Connecticut’s greatest resource and that all sectors of Connecticut’s society have the privilege and obligation to honor them. The town funded the event until 2010, then turned to the YMCA for help. That was the first year that Family Day was held at Doolittle Park rather than Community Lake, though it continued to be an event that was separate from the races.
In the fall of 2008, Roz Gallagher and Sean Doherty, Executive Director of the Wallingford Family YMCA, decided to combine the two races. Joining forces, the first annual Fishbein/YMCA Road Race was held in 2009. “We merged two long tradition races into one, and basically pulled from everybody’s strengths,” says Sean Doherty. That first year brought more than 130 runners out to compete! Just two years later, in 2011, Family Day was added to the mix, and the event officially became the Fishbein/YMCA Community Day & Road Race, hosted by the Wallingford Family YMCA. The event grew to include over 220 runners for the 5K & 10K, and hundreds more for the Youth and Kid Races, followed by a stream of attendees at Community Day.
In 2013, proceeds shifted to fund LiveSTRONG at the Y, a free program that is designed to help cancer survivors rebuild a healthier spirit, mind and body. The Walk for LiveSTRONG was created in 2014, creating an opportunity for survivors and supporters to participate in a non-competitive event while raising funds for the LiveSTRONG program.
Now, almost fifty years later, the YMCA has collaborated with Celebrate Wallingford to make the 500+ participant event part of the town-wide weekend that draws thousands. The success of this event is due to the generosity of sponsors, as well as the help of more than 100 volunteers. As the event continues to evolve, we look forward to it growing and thriving!
