CORONAVIRUS ACTION PLAN UPDATES

Dear Y Community,

At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we take your health and safety very seriously. The respiratory illness COVID-19(Coronavirus) has spread across the world, and is now in the United States with cases in Connecticut. When a serious health issue arises, our staff team comes together to reassess our strategies to keep our members and staff healthy. We are monitoring this situation on a continual basis, and will make decisions in the best interest of our Y community. Please check this page for the most up-to-date information.

As you may know, the Governor has mandated that all public school districts close for at least two weeks due to the public health concern. In addition, he has mandated that all gyms close as of March 16, 2020 at 8:00 pm. At this time, all Wallingford Family YMCA operations will be closed until further notice.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at sdoherty@wallingfordymca.org.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Executive Director

Your health is very important to us, so we will be providing you with alternate workout options during this time. These workouts can be found here.

Please check back for updates so you can stay motivated!!

Keep friends and family safe.

IN THE PAST 14 DAYS, HAVE YOU:

  • Traveled outside of the US?
  • Come in contact with anyone that may have been exposed to COVID-19?
  • Experienced any cold or flu-like symptoms?

If you can answer YES to one or more of these questions, please stay home and keep your distance from others! It’s the best way to protect your family and friends.

Basic hygiene is the best thing you can do. Everyone should always take simple daily precautions to help prevent the spread of all respiratory illnesses:
• Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap or use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol.
• Sneeze and cough into tissues. If you get mucus or spit on your skin, clean it off right away. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially people exhibiting respiratory symptoms and fever.
• Stay home when you’re sick.
• Regularly and thoroughly clean surfaces, such as counter tops and doorknobs, with a disinfectant.

March 17, 2020

Dear Y Community,

As we receive updated information regarding the Coronavirus crisis, we will continue to update our action plan. In anticipation of the YMCA’s requirement to keep our facilities closed for the full month of April, we will not be drafting membership dues on April 1. At this time, we anticipate reopening on May 1, and will keep you updated as we move closer to that date. We will communicate with members prior to drafting dues, and will work with those who may be in need of financial assistance at that time.

We understand that this is a difficult time for our community, and that many of our members and program participants may need additional financial assistance when we reopen our doors.  At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we never turn anyone away for the inability to pay, and we will be here to support our community as we recover from this crisis. We anticipate a greater need for financial assistance for childcare, camp, programs and more as we reopen our doors. If you would like to voluntarily donate your April membership dues or any amount of your choosing to support those in need, please click the button below.

The Wallingford Family YMCA has been serving the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility for 75 years, thanks to the generous support of our donors and YMCA community.  With your help, we can continue to provide much needed programs and services to those in need for many years to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

March 16, 2020

Dear Y Community,

For 75 years, the Wallingford Family YMCA has been serving the community, and  has a continued history of meeting the needs of those we serve. In our years of service to the community, it is hard to imagine more difficult times than with the current Coronavirus situation.

As you may know, the Governor has mandated that all public school districts close for at least two weeks due to the public health concern. In addition, he has mandated that all gyms close as of March 16, 2020 at 8:00 pm. At this time, all Wallingford Family YMCA operations will be closed until further notice, with the exception of our TLC early childcare center.

We sincerely apologize for the short notice and for any inconvenience this may cause. We also understand that this news may be disappointing to our staff, members and program participants. We do not take this measure lightly and remain committed to supporting and strengthening our communities.

At this time, we will draft membership dues on April 1st as scheduled in order to keep our organization sustainable. If you are experiencing a financial hardship, please contact Chris Kingston at ckingston@wallingfordymca.org. At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we never turn anyone away for the inability to pay, thanks in large part to the support of our donors and members through the Community Support Campaign

Moving forward, please know that we continue to be engaged and informed, and that we remain in constant contact with state and local agencies. We will continue to update our website at www.wallingfordymca.org/coronavirus-updates with the most up to date information regarding the status of operations. In addition, on this site, we have posted some at-home workout options that you can do until we reopen our doors.

These are truly unprecedented times. Thank you for your patience and loyalty as we move through this.

Sincerely,

Sean Doherty

Executive Director

Dear Y Community,
At the Wallingford Family YMCA, we take your health and safety very seriously. The respiratory illness COVID-19(Coronavirus) has spread across the world, and is now in the United States with cases in Connecticut. When a serious health issue arises, our staff team comes together to reassess our strategies to keep our members and staff healthy.

We understand people may worry about the new Coronavirus. In today’s connected world, an outbreak anywhere can be a risk everywhere. Risk is dependent on exposure. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to believe the risk to the U.S. public is low.

While CDC considers the Coronavirus a serious situation and is taking preparedness measures, the immediate risk in the U.S. is considered low.

The coronavirus is spread through respiratory vapor, such as when someone sneezes or coughs into the air around you. Influenza viruses and common cold viruses are also spread this way.

At the Wallingford Family YMCA, these are some precautions and actions that we are initiating:
• YMCA staff that are ill will be sent home and asked to stay out of work until they are symptom free.
• We are asking members who may be ill with a contagious condition to stay home and return to the Y when they are feeling better.
• As has been the policy, children in our Early Education Center are required to stay out of school a minimum of 24 hours after being deemed symptom free.
• Additional signage has been added at both of our facilities highlighting virus prevention tips.
• Additional hand sanitizer stations will be available to all. We will also make more disinfectant bottles available throughout both of our facilities.
• We are asking all members to clean equipment BEFORE and AFTER workouts, with the disinfectant that we provide.
• Our cleaning staff will be cleaning door knobs, light switches, countertops, equipment, handles, weights, etc.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at sdoherty@wallingfordymca.org.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
