OUR CHILDCARE PHILOSOPHY & GOALS
At TLC, our childcare philosophy focuses on the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility. As part of this, our goals include making sure that our staff follow these values, and that our childcare activities reflect these values. Children learn through play in a safe and exciting setting. In addition, teachers use age appropriate materials and activities.
We strengthen the emotional, social, physical and creative development of each child. Also, we meet the needs of families with consistent, nurturing adult relationships. Our childcare teachers help children resolve conflict, promote self-esteem, and understand the importance of families and the community. As a result, we teach children to appreciate the diversity in people.
CENTER HISTORY & INFORMATION
Founded by the Wallingford Family YMCA in 1989, The Learning Community (TLC) was formerly known as “Tot Time”. Because of the need for growth of childcare, a partnership was created between the YMCA and Choate Rosemary Hall. As a result, Tot Time moved into the renovated Bronfman building at Choate in September 1994. A main focus of this partnership is the joint learning experienced by children, Choate students, parents and teachers. Therefore, the center was renamed The Learning Community in 1995. TLC currently serves up to 80 full-time children, and the preschool is acting as a teaching environment for Choate students taking child development courses.
The Learning Community is open Monday-Friday from 7:00AM-6:00PM.
